How to type special characters

Copying is fastest. If you use a character often, learn its shortcut. Everything here is checked against official docs.

Windows

With a numeric keypad you can use Alt codes. Hold Alt and type 0 plus the decimal code on the keypad. For example, Alt+0176 types the degree sign.

We checked this for U+00A0 through U+00FF. We do not claim it for other characters.

In Microsoft Word, type the hex code and press Alt+X right after it. The code becomes the character. Other programs may not do this.

Korean keyboard keys

The right Ctrl key converts Hangul to Hanja. The right Alt key switches between Korean and English.

Windows logo key plus Space switches the keyboard layout.

Windows logo key, Ctrl and O together open the on-screen keyboard. Use it to press keys your physical keyboard lacks.

Mac

Press and hold a letter key. An accent menu opens. Click the accent you want or press its number.

On the ABC layout, press Option+N for a tilde, then press a. You get ã.

Not covered here

The Korean consonant key plus Hanja key symbol table, the full Mac Option combinations, and phone press-and-hold menus are not listed because we could not confirm them in an official source.
